Daneesha Provo to assist with X-Women Basketball program

Antigonish, NS - STFX women's basketball interim head coach Tyrone Watson is very pleased to announce that Canadian national team member Daneesha Provo will be joining the X-Women coaching staff for the remainder of the 2021-22 AUS season.

"Adding Daneesha Provo to our X-Women program for the remainder of the season is a step in the right direction for our future success," notes Watson. "She has a tremendous basketball resume, possesses great character and positive community relations, and has the ability to connect with female basketball players on and off the court."

A native of Dartmouth, NS, Provo has been involved with the Canadian national team since 2015 and is currently rehabilitating an achilles injury she suffered last June at the Canada Basketball senior women's national team training camp in Tampa, Fla. leading up to the Olympic Games.

"I am incredibly excited to join the X-Women Basketball family, and I am looking forward to working with the coaching staff, and the amazing group of student-athletes," comments Provo. "I am blessed and grateful to have this opportunity and so eager to get on the court with the girls and get to work."

An Olympic hopeful, Provo had attended the Canadian camp after completing her first professional season in Germany's Damen Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL), the premier women's basketball league in the country. Competing with Eisvögel USC Freiburg, she led the league in scoring with 20.4 points per game. Prior to her pro contract, Provo spent five seasons in the NCAA, playing her freshman season at Clemson, then transferring to the University of Utah for the remainder of her university career.

The guard was a dominant shooter and one of the best defenders in the Pac-12 conference, finishing the 2017-18 season ranked in the top-20 in scoring, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, three-point percentage and three-pointers made per game. Provo suffered a season-ending knee injury in her senior year at Utah but fought back from her injury to play another season in 2019-20, rounding out her career at Utah with 95 total games played, averaging 20.3 minutes per game, 8.2 points per game, and 2.4 rebounds per game, while earning both BA Health Science and BA Sociology degrees.

Provo's national team highlights include being a member of the development team that placed fourth at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, along with junior team competition that placed 8th at the U19 World Championships in Russia in 2015, and silver at the U19 FIBA Americas in 2014. Provo has competed in 38 international games for Canada dating back to 2013 and enjoyed a successful high school career at Kent School in Connecticut.

Provo will join the X-Women program as the team trains, awaiting for the resumption of AUS competition pending the lifting of COVID restrictions on sport participation.
