Mystics defeat X-Women in tournament opening game

Halifax, NS – In the opening game of the MSVU Dyrick McDermott Invitational tournament, the host MSVU Mystics defeated the StFX X-Women 70-46 Sunday evening.

The Mystics got out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter of play and then outscored the visiting X-Women 18-10 in the second to take a 37-21 lead at halftime.

The X-Women were unable to overcome the deficit as the Mystics held them to only eight points in the third quarter. MSVU held a 59-29 lead after three quarters before closing out the win.

StFX played with a short squad of 10 athletes. Maggie Segeren earned player of the game honours for X, she scored six points off the bench and had four steals in the game.

Tahlia Jones was the Mystics player of the game, scoring eight points on the night, along with four rebounds and three assists.

The top scorers for the Mystics were Madison Doucet with 10 points, along with Kelsey McGrath and Nikki Arsenault who each scored nine points.

Kim Kingsbury lead the X-Women with 11 points in the game and eight rebounds. Nalini Majaraj added eight points.

StFX will be back in action on Monday when they tip-off at 3:00 pm against the St. Thomas Tommies.
