Sea-Hawks win close game over X-Women

St. John's, NF – The Memorial Sea-Hawks (7-6) played to a close 61-58 victory over the StFX X-Women (1-11) Saturday evening.

With less than 20 seconds to go in the game and StFX down by three points, the X-Women missed a trio of potential game tying three-point shots as the Sea-Hawks were able to hold on to win.

With 1:08 to go in the fourth quarter, Sydney Stewart hit a free throw that put the Hawks up 57-55. X-Women co-leading scorer on the night Jessica Miller responded on StFX's next possession, nailing a deep three with the shot clock winding down.

Memorial took a timeout and re-grouped, as they were able to regain the lead on a Rosie Stanoev lay-up. Stanoev, scored nine points in fourth quarter without missing any shots. She was 2-for-2 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. A Stewart free throw put Memorial up by three points and the X-Women were unable to recover.

The X-Women put forth an impressive effort in the loss. Miller was matched by teammate Jamie McCarron as high scorer, both dropping 13 for the visiting side.

Kim Taylor scored nine points and had four rebounds for the X-Women while Holly Scott added seven.

For Memorial, Graciel Diaz-Brito played one of her best games of the year with 12 points, 13 boards, and four assists. Sydney Stewart was the high scorer with 16 points.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow at 12:00 pm NST at the Memorial Field House.
