X-Women's playoff hopes dashed by Sea-Hawks

St. John's, NF - The Memorial Sea-Hawks (4-16) beat the StFX X-Women (4-16) in the final game of the AUS regular season by a 68-63 score, Saturday evening at The Field House. The loss eliminated the X-Women from playoff contention.

StFX came out strong to start the game, clearly with playoffs on their mind. The X-Women received scoring from six different players in the first quarter, with Chelsea Provo and Kolbi Roper leading the way with 4 points each.

Memorial struggled offensively in the first, but did get a strong opening quarter from Brook Wright who scored 4 points and hauled down 4 rebounds. The Sea-Hawks trailed after the first by a score of 16 to 7.

The Sea-Hawks found their scoring touch to start the second quarter, behind 6 points from Lindsay Taylor and 5 points and 5 rebounds from Sydney Stewart.

The X-Women went into the halftime break with a 31-25 advantage. Leading scorers at the half for the X-Women were Lindsay Lessard with 9 points and Chelsea Provo with 6 points.

Memorial halftime scoring leaders were Sydney Stewart with 7 points and Brook Wright and Lindsay Taylor with 6 points each.

The Sea-Hawks used their second quarter momentum to carry them into the third. After being down 6 points at half, the Sea-Hawks took the third quarter by a 19-11 margin, heading into the fourth up 44 to 42.

With the playoffs on the line for the X-Women, they came out strong and quickly tied the game at 46-46.  With both teams battling tough on every possession, it would be the Sea-Hawks who pulled ahead and they would not relinquish the lead. Memorial hit some key free throws down the stretch and topped the X-Women by a 68-63 margin.

Leading scorers for StFX were Shannon Hatch, who finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Kolbi Roper and Lindsay Lessard both put up double-doubles for the X-Women, with Roper finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Lessard added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Leading scorers for the Sea-Hawks were Sydney Stewart and Carolyn Adams, who scored 14 points each. Brook Wright finished the game with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Lindsay Taylor chipped in with 12 points.

The Subway AUS Championship is scheduled for March 4-6 at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. Saint Mary's, Acadia, Cape Breton, UNB, UPEI and Dalhousie have qualified. Both StFX and Memorial finished the season tied for seventh spot, two points out of playoff contention.
