X-Women wrap up regular season play in Halifax

(HALIFAX, N.S.)--The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the StFX X-Women 62-45 Friday night in AUS women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre. The game wraps up the season for the X-Women who finish with a 4-16 record, out of AUS playoff contention.

The Huskies improve to 15-4 and are still in the mix for securing a first round bye for next weekend's Subway AUS championship.

SMU's Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.) led all scorers with 14 points in the game as the Huskies jumped out to quarter leads of 20-11 and 30-23 at half.

Saint Mary's won a tight third quarter 11-10 and built a 41-33 lead heading into the fourth.

A 21-12 SMU fourth quarter gave the Huskies the 62-45 victory.

Kolbi Roper (North Vancouver, B.C.) paced StFX with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.) added 10 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Shannon Hatch contributed 6 points off the bench for the X-Women.

Laura Langille (Bedford, N.S.) had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the SMU win, as they now sit tied with Dalhousie (13-6) and UPEI (12-6) for first place.

Rounding out the Huskies scoring were Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) with 12 points, Carlie Nugent (Richmond Hill, Ont.) eight, Emma Valikoski (Espoo, Finland) and Shanicka Wood (Ajax, Ont.) five points apiece.

Alexandra Smye (Halifax, N.S.) had three points for Saint Mary's while Veronica Vaickus (Baie-Comeau, Que.) had two and Katrina Murrell (Markham, Ont.) finished with a free throw and three rebounds.

The game marked the final AUS regular season game for the X-Women (4-16).

Saint Mary's wraps up regular season play Saturday at 6pm when they host UPEI in a pivotal four-point game.
