Hoop X-Women battle, but lose to Acadia

Antigonish, NS - The visiting Acadia Axewomen earned their first win of the regular season with a 77-70 victory over the StFX X-Women in AUS basketball action Friday evening at Oland Centre.

Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, AZ) with 19 points, including six-for-six from the free-throw line, led five Axewomen starters in double figures.

Anderson added five assists, three rebounds and two steals for Acadia, who led by as many as 14 points in the win.

Chanel Smith (Halifax, NS) chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds.

Subway player of the game Jenalle Vanhie (Dorchester, ON), Allie Barry (Yarmouth, NS) and April Deus (Brampton, ON) scored 12 points apiece.

X-Women player of the game Kolbi Roper (North Vancouver, BC) led all scorers with 19 points, while adding nine rebounds, two assists, one rebound and one blocked shot.

Melissa Gottschall (Antigonish, NS) added 13 points and five rebounds, while Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, ON) chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.

Off the bench, sophomore Kayla MacIntyre (Sydney, NS) contributed 10 points and two rebounds.

"I had a lot of luck and great teammates who got me some passes," MacIntyre said. As for the loss, she said her team had too many turnovers.

"We had a great effort but we cannot give away the ball that much," MacIntyre said.

The Axewomen, who led by as many as 12 in the opening half, were up 22-10 after the first quarter.

The X-Women outscored the Axewomen 19 to 12 in the second quarter to trim the Acadia lead to 34-29 at halftime.

StFX won a hard-fought third quarter 21-20 but were unable to close the gap in the final frame as the visiting Aexewomen held on for the win

Acadia (1-11) will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 27, when they travel to Halifax to face the Dalhousie Tigers (7-3).

The X-Women, who drop to 4-8 on the season, will tip-off against the rival and first-place Saint Mary's Huskies (10-1) Wednesday, Jan 28. Game time is 6 p.m. at Oland Centre.
