Golden Hawks claim exhibition hoop win over X-Women

The StFX X-Women dropped a 76-55 decision to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks in CIS exhibition basketball action Thursday night at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.

Laurier, on the strength of a 30-11 scoring advantage in the second quarter, led StFX 45-28 at halftime.

Led by 10 points from third-year guard Melissa Gottschall (Antigonish, NS), the X-Women were ahead 17-15 after the first quarter.

Gottschall, who topped her team with 19 points, added three assists, two steals and one rebound.

Junior forward Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, ON) scored a double-double - 12 points and 10 rebounds. Post player Kolbi Roper (North Vancouver, BC) contributed six points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Off the bench, Kayla MacIntyre (Sydney, NS) chipped in six points, two rebounds and one assist.

Kaitlyn Schenck, who scored a game-high 21 points, was one of three Golden Hawks in double figures. Samantha Jacobs and Whitney Ellenor contributed 14 and 10 points apiece. Ellenor added 11 rebounds to lead all players.

Point guard Lee Anna Osei completed an all-around game with nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Laurier shot 38 per cent from the field, while the X-Women made 29.4 per cent of their field goal attempts.

StFX returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 17 when they host the Laurentian Voyageurs in pre-season action. Game time is 6 p.m. at Oland Centre.
