X-Women basketball welcomes Samantha Robertson

ANTIGONISH, NS StFX women's basketball head coach Augy Jones is pleased to welcome Toronto native Samantha Robertson to the X-Women program for the 2014-15 season.

"I am personally very excited that Samantha has chosen to continue her elite basketball career at St. Francis Xavier University," comments Coach Jones. "As a pure point guard during my playing days, I truly appreciate the value of such players to a winning team. Sam has a high basketball IQ and an even higher commitment to improving her basketball skills."

"We are looking for talented, self-motivated players and she fits those characteristics perfectly," continues Jones. "Samantha is a key piece to the continued improvement of the X-Women basketball program. Talented point guards facilitate championship banners."

The 5'6" point guard is in her final year at Bill Crothers Secondary School (Charter Sports School) in Toronto where she has captained the team in both her grade 12 and 11 seasons. Robertson also played for North Toronto and presently Barrie in the Ontario Junior Elite League (JUEL). For the past two summers she played for the same 'A' Game AAU squad that produced current X-Women athletes Lindsay Lessard and Kimberley Taylor.

Ranked in CROWN basketball's 'Top Prospects for 2014', Robertson previously played for the Scarborough Blues Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) from 2008 to 2011. She captained the Under 16 team to an AAA OBA provincial gold medal in 2012, and was an Under 15 AAA OBA silver medalist in 2011.

She was chosen for Ontario Basketball's 'Center for Performance'  in both 2011 and 2010, in addition to being selected for the Toronto "Rising Stars' all-star game in the same two years. Aside from her on-court talents, Robertson has been an honor roll student in grades 10, 11 and 12.

When asked about her decision to attend StFX, Robertson responded, "I am really excited to be going to StFX next year. My visit to campus made my decision very easy, I came home knowing that X was where I wanted to go, everything about it just seemed like a perfect fit for me, an opportunity I wouldn't be able to match at any other school."

"I enjoyed seeing the campus, meeting with the academic advisor, socializing with the team and getting to see Coach Augy Jones in action. Watching Augy at work made me realize that he is the coach for me. The spirit around the team and all the sports programs at StFX was amazing."

Robertson continued, "I would like to thank the coaches that have brought me to this point:  Jodi Gram, Yaw Afful and Todd Smith. I see that Coach Jones is building something special at StFX and I can't wait to be a part of it."
