Chisholm and MacDonald double gold medalists at AUS track championship

Moncton, NB – The STFX track team competed at the Subway AUS Championship on Friday and Saturday at the CEPS Louis-J.-Robichaud and took home nine medals.

The X-Women came third overall in the team standings while the X-Mne were sixth. The Dalhousie University Tigers won both men and women championship banners.

The Tigers women's team finished first with 153 points, far ahead of the UNB Reds (76) and STFX X-Women (60). The Université de Moncton took fourth place (44), followed by Memorial (29) UPEI Panthers (99), Saint Mary's (12) and Acadia (3). It was the Tigers' 32nd straight banner since 1989-1990.

On the men's side, the Tigers amassed 138.5 points compared to 95 for the second place UNB Reds and 68 for Moncton in third spot. Saint Mary's (46.5), Memorial (22) and STFX (17) rounded out the standings.

For the X-Women both Siona Chisholm and Aidan MacDonald were double gold medalists. Chisholm was the AUS champion in both the 1500m (4:40.90) and 3000m (9:43.82), while MacDonald topped the field in the 600m (1:36.20) and 1000m (2:58.15).

Allie Sandluck (10:12.83) won silver and Eileen Benoit (10:25.06) bronze in the 3000m for a STFX podium sweep.

A pair of X-Women relay teams took home AUS medals as the 4x800m squad claimed gold with a 9:31.37 performance. Team members included Allie Sandluck, Natasha Chojnacki, Brynn Hebert and Aidan MacDonald.

Hebert, Mairin Canning, Chojnacki and MacDonald were also members of the bronze medal 4x400m X-Women team who clocked in with a 4:11.02 showing.

On the men's side, Jacob Benoit earned a bronze medal for STFX with an 8:41.85 race in the 3000m.

Earning honours as the most valuable athletes of the championship were Max Mazerolle of the Aigles Bleus and Lorena Heubach of the Tigers. The AUS Track Athletes of the Year were Cape Breton's Promise Akachukwu and StFX's Siona Chisholm. The AUS Field Athletes of the Year are Samuel Bourque of the Aigles Bleus and Lexie Shannon of the Reds.

Moncton's Samuel Bourque and STFX's Siona Chisholm were honoured as the AUS Rookies of the Year. Volunteer Coaches of the Year are Andrew Conrad (Dalhousie) on the women's side and Earl Church (Moncton) for the men. The AUS men's Coach of the Year went to Moncton's Steve LeBlanc, while UNB's Chris Belof took home AUS women's Coach of the Year honours. The AUS Community Service Awards were presented to Alain Lavoie (Moncton) and Abbey MacLellan (Dalhousie).
