Track & field athletes compete in final regular season meet

Halifax, NS – StFX track & field athletes wrapped up AUS regular competition Saturday at the SMU Open at the Canada Games Centre. The competition was the final one to prepare for the upcoming Subway AUS Championship, slated for February 23-24 at the Université de Moncton.

In advance of Saturday's meet there was an AUS Relay Challenge held Friday night at the ame venue. StFX entered two relay teams including the women's 4x200m team of Allie Flowers, Hayley Wilson, Samanatha Taylor and Megan Graham. They won the event with a time fo 1:44.01.

The X-Men 4x400m relay team also won their event. Tim Brennan, Justin Major, Eric Sutton and Quinn Alexander clocked a time of 3:39.71. 

In Saturday's meet, X-Men athletes competed in the long jump, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 300m, 600m, 1000m and 3000m events.

Kirishnia Cooper was the lone X-Men in the long jump with a fourth place finish at 5.87m.

In the 60m hurdles, Brennan came third with a  time of 8.88, followed by Jonathan Heidebrecht (9.07) and Sutton (9.87) in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Jonathan West had a second place showing in the 60m dash for the X-Men, clocking in at 7.10. Joseph Pereyras was 16th at 7.52.

Brennan came in fourth place in the 300m race, finishing at 36.81. Also competing for StFX were Sutton (5th, 37.05), Major (6th, 37.23), Taylor Leger (13th, 39.53) and Zach Chaisson (14th, 40.03).

Brennan followed up with a first place finish in the 600m race with a 1:22.29 result. Alexander (1:25.32) placed 5th overall and Leger (1:27.92) was seventh.

Creighton Jewkes was the lone X competitor in the 1000m event and he came third overall with a time of 3:09.95.

Rounding out the X-Men results were three distance runners in the 3000m race. Addison Derhak (8:51.16) was third, followed by Paul MacLellan (9:00.32) in fifth and Johan Shankel (9:30.07) in eighth.

In the women's events, StFX were represented in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 300m, 600m, 1000m, 1500m and 3000m events.

Lani Deakin (1.40m) and Erin Brennan came third and fourth, respectively in the high jump, while Madison Nastasiuk was second overall in the long jump at 5.29m. Also competing in the long jump were Hayley Wilson (3rd, 5:18m), Deakin (7th, 4.75m), Baillie Marcotte (12th, 4.45m), Brennan (13th, 4.39m) and Kylie Ito (16th, 3.79m). Wilson took top spot in the triple jump with an 11.49m result.

Wilson followed up with a second place finish in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 9.39 seconds. Megan Graham (9.41) was right behind her in third place and Catherine Kennedy (9.67) was sixth.

Wilson had another top three finish in the 60m dash, coming third at 7.83. Samantha Taylor (8.08) placed fourth, while Marcotte (8.29) was fifth, followed by Emma Boudreau (8.35) in sixth and Nastasiuk (8.65) in seventh.

The women's 300m sprint saw Allie Flower take second spot at 41.31. Graham was third at 43.17, while Beth Lawrence (43.26) fourth, Boudreau (44.08) sixth and Kennedy (45.66) tenth.

Flower was also the top X-Women finisher in the 600m race as she won top spot with a 1:39.03 result. Lawrence placed second at 1:40.82.

Three X-Women competed in the 1000m race including Jane Hergett (3rd, 3:00.43), Paige Chisholm (5th, 3:06.71) and Hana Marmura (6th, 3:12.10).

Zoe Johnston claimed top spot in the 1500m with a 4:52.87 finish. Rachel MacDougall (4:53.46) came second and Olivia MacDonald (5:14.86) was fifth. MacDougall placed third in the 3000m event with a time of 10:41.08, while Ashley Robson (11:19.42) was seventh.

The X-Women and X-Men athletes have a weekend off before heading to Moncton February 23-24 for the 2018 Subway AUS Championship.
