Track team competes in Halifax

Halifax, NS – The X-Men and X-Women track & field teams competed at the Athletics NS Indoor Open & Club Championship on Friday evening and Saturday at the Canada Games Center in a range of sprints, distance and jumping events.

Angus Rawling won the men's 3000m race with a time of 8:16.77, a showing that currently ranks him second overall amongst U SPORTS competitors. He also competed in the 1500m race where he placed second overall with a 3:57 showing.

Also in the 1500m race were Alex Neuffer (4th, 3:59.29), Addison Derhak (11th, 4:12.84), Paul MacLellan (14th, 4:20.15) and Jonah Shankel (18th, 4:26.13). Neuffer earned second place in the 3000m race with a time of 8:26.98 and MacLellan was fourth at 8:53.88.

In the same disciplines on the women's side, Hana Marmura came second in the 1500m race with a 4:59.47 time, while Paige Chisholm (5:00.72) was fifth overall. Four X-Women competed in the 3000m including Zoe Johnston who was second at 10:49.97. Ashley Robson (11:31.16) came fifth and Olivia MacDonald (11:38.52) and Maggie Oliver (12:50.89) were sixth and seventh, respectively.

In the sprinting events, Catherine Kennedy was the lone X competitor in the women's 300m race where she came fourth with a 44.78 clocking. Kennedy was second (9.89) in the 60m hurdles behind her teammates Hayley Wilson who won the event with a 9.80 result. Megan Graham (3rd, 9.97) and Erin Brennan (5th, 10:65) also ran the hurdles.

Wilson came second in the 60m dash at 7.83 while Graham (8.28) was eighth and Kylie Ito (8.83) came 11th.

Rounding out the women's races were a trio of X runners in the 600m. Jane Hergett (1:38.69) placed third overall, followed by Beth Lawrence (1:41.24) and Alex Gosse (1:47.50) in fifth and seventh spots.

In the men's 600m race, Quinton Alexander was the top X-Men in third place with a 1:24.18 finish. Eric Sutton (7th, 1:27.08) and Taylor Leger (11th, 1:28.79) also ran.

The men's 300m dash featured seven X-Men sprinters. Tim Brennan earned second spot with a 36.44 clocking. Brad Barclay (8th, 37.70), Eric Sutton (9th, 37.80), Justin Major (11th, 37.84), Leger (14th, 39.31), Zachary Chiasson (24th, 40.65) and Liam Robinson (25th, 40.73) rounded out the X field.

Brennan also had a strong performance in the 60m hurdles where he again came second overall, clocking in 8.84 seconds. Teammates Jonathan Heidbrecht came fourth at 9.21. In the 60m dash, Jonathan West (7.11) came third for the X-Men, while Adrian Kinney (11th, 7.30), Heidebrecht (18th, 7.45) and Robinson (24th, 7.65) also competed.

In the men's jumping events, Cameron Glover placed third in the high jump with a 1.85m performance. Kirishnia Cooper came third in the long jump (6.11m) and won the triple jump (12.69m).

In the women's jumps, Wilson won the triple jump (10.88), came third in the long jump (5.13m) and fourth in the high jump (1.40m). Teammate Alanna Deakin was second in the high jump (1.45m) while Brennan was sixth (1.35m). In the long jump Maddy Nastasiuk (5.03m) placed fifth for the X-Women and Brennan (4.40m) was ninth.

Next on the schedule for the track and field team is a road trip to Montreal to compete in the two-day McGill Team Challenge. The event takes place Jan. 26th and 27th.
