X-Men track & field third at AUS championship

Moncton, NB – The X-Men track & field team claimed third spot overall at the 2015 Subway AUS track & field championship held this past weekend. The X-Men scored 87 points, behind the second place UNB Varsity Reds with 96 and the AUS champion Dalhousie Tigers who tallied 148.5.

Moncton placed fourth with 35 points, followed by Saint Mary's (20), Acadia (9.5) and St. Thomas (9).

The X-Men won two gold medals, five silver and five bronze over the course of the two-day championship event.

Head coach Bernie Chisholm was very pleased with the showing of the X-Women and X-Men teams on the weekend, commenting, "Our conference is getting stronger each year and that could be seen by the large number of meet records that were set this weekend. We came away with a total of 28 medals, five athletes named first team all-conference and 12 second team all-conference. So overall we have to be pleased to see our program continue to grow."

AUS track athlete of the year Mackenzie Munroe, a fifth year sprinter (3rd year eligibility) from Yarmouth, NS, took home an individual gold medal in the 600m, silver in the 300m, along with a relay silver medal in the 4x200m. He nearly claimed a second silver medal in the 4x400m race but the X-Men were unfortunately disqualified due to a baton drop.

Munroe clocked a time of 1:21.68 in his gold medal performance in the 600m, breaking the 23 year old AUS record of 1:22.00. He ran 36.04 in his silver medal 300m showing.

Scott Donald, a third year distance runner from Ottawa, ON and 2014 AUS cross country individual champion, was the other gold medalist for the blue and white. His time of 3:56.47 was the best in the 1500m race.

He picked up a silver medal in the 3000m event with a time of 8:38.37 and claimed his third medal of the weekend with a silver medal performance with the 4x800m relay team. Joining him for the 8:08.32 finish in the relay were Alex Cyr (Abram-Village, PE), Calvin DeWolfe (Bridgewater, NS) and Bryden Tate (Heatherton, NS).

The X-Men 4x200m relay team also won silver, finishing with a time of 1:35.25. Team members are Matt Murphy (Halifax, NS), Demetrius Ferguson (Nassau, Bahamas), Mackenzie Munroe and Timothy Brennan (Beechwood, NB).

The 4x400m relay team thought they had also won a silver medal after Munroe made a fierce comeback after a baton drop, but upon a protest and further review, StFX was qualified and eliminated from medal contention.

Rounding out the StFX silver medalists were third year shot putter Robert Kennedy (Truro, NS) who had a 14.26m result.

Shawn Costello won bronze in the shot put with a 13.00m throw. Other bronze medalists for the X-Men included Alex Cyr in the 1500m (3:57.37), Demetrius Ferguson in the 60m dash (7.09), Andrew Bain (Gatineau, QC) in the 600m (1:24.44) and Alex Neuffer (Stratford, PE) in the 3000m (8:41.42).
