X-Women compete at SMU Open

Halifax, NS – The X-Women track and field team competed at the Saint Mary's Open meet Saturday at the Canada Games Centre. StFX athletes were represented in all events.

In the 60m dash, freshman Hayley Wilson came second overall with a 7.88 showing. Fourth year veteran Eilish MacQuarrie was third at 7.97 while Jillian Murphy (8.09) and Candace Cruickshank (8.12) followed closely in fourth and sixth positions. Abbi Finnan (8th, 8.19), Nadine Otten (10th, 8.37) and Jillian Nolan (13th, 8.69) rounded out the X-Women placements.

In the 300m dash, Allie Flower placed second in the age 18-19 race with a time of 42.54, while six of her teammates placed in the age 20+ race.

MacQuarrie was the race winner with a time of 40.50, followed by Bridget Brennan (41.77) in second place, Beth Lawrence (43.84) in sixth, Kevyn Timmons (44.74) in seventh, Cruickshank (45.56) in 10th and Nolan (47.61) in 13th.

Flower claimed top spot in the 600m for age 18-19 race with a time of 1:38.79, while Lawrence was the winner in the 600m race for age 20+. Her time was also 1:38.79. Cruickshank placed second at 1:44.05, followed by Timmons (1:44.25) in third and Brittany Wadden (1:54.04) in sixth.

Olivia MacDonald was second overall in both the 1000m and 1500m races for age 18-19. She posted a time of 3:23.04 in the 1000m and 5:33.03 in the 1500m.

Liz MacDonald came fifth in the 1000m (age 20+) with a 3:07.02 clocking.  

In the women's 1500m race, StFX athletes placed second through fifth positions. Leah Gouthro (4:59.97) was third, followed by Ginny Anderson (5:00.24), Kendra MacNeil (5:17.66) and Maura Gillis (5:22.79).

In the 3000m event, MacNeil was the top X-Women finisher in sixth spot with a time of 11:26.29. Anderson came seventh at 11:26.61 and Gillis (11:49.05) was eighth.

Nadine Otten was the lone X sprinter in the 60m hurdles. She placed second with a time of 9.56.

In the jumping events, Mary Catherine Thompson came second in the triple jump with an 11.07m showing, tied for fifth in the high jump (1.39m) and was eighth in the long jump (4.54m).

X-Women teammates Bridget Brennan and Hayley Wilson tied for second overall in the long jump, each posting a 5.14m jump.

There was an AUS Relay Challenge held on Sunday, also at the Canada Games Centre. The X-Women did not enter teams in the 4x200m or 4x800m relays, though their 4x400m relay team came in first placed with a time of 3:53.02.

Bridget Brennan, Eilish MacQuarrie, Allie Flower and Beth Lawrence made up the relay team that broke the StFX record by seven seconds. The time also places them in the top five in the country in that event.

Next on the schedule for the tracksters is the Subway AUS Championship scheduled for February 28th and March 1st at the Universite de Moncton.
