X-Men fair well at SMU Open

Halifax, NS – The X-Men track and field team competed at the Saint Mary's Open meet Saturday at the Canada Games Centre, fairing very well with numerous top three finishes.

Demetrius Ferguson came third overall in the 60m dash with a clocking of 7.14. Teammate Matt Murphy was behind him in fourth position at 7.23.

In the 300m dash, veteran X sprinter Mackenzie Munroe claimed top honors with a time of 35.52. Andrew Bain (36.62) came second, while Murphy (37.01) was third and Thomas Faour (37.97) was fifth.

Timothy Brennan posted a time of 38.14 in the 300m race for age 18-19. In the same age classification in the 600m event he was first with a 1:24.03 showing.

In the 600m for age 20 and older, Munroe won his second race of the day. He clocked 1:21.94 in the 600m race. Bain again followed in second place with a time of 1:22.38, with Ryan Washburn (1:27.91) coming in fourth spot and Faour (1:30.04) in sixth.

In the 1000m race, Bryden Tate was the lone X competitor. He came third overall with a time of 2:30.08.

The 1500m event featured five X-Men, including race winner and AUS individual cross country champion Scott Donald with a 3:56.86 finish. Alex Cyr (3:57.86) and Tate (4:12.70) followed in second and third places, respectively. Warren Ferguson (4:28.38) was fifth and Corey McNamara (4:33.79) was sixth.

The 3000m race had seven blue and white racers as Alex Neuffer claimed top spot with a time of 8:28.25. Calvin DeWolfe was second at 8:34.24 and Nick Favero was sixth at 8:57.94. Rounding out the X finishes were Matt Eliot (9:31.92), Scott Donald (9:38.68), Ryan O'Regan (9:39.03) and Warren Ferguson (9:40.06) in eighth through 11th positions.

Tim Brennan and Jake McKenna competed in the 60m hurdles for the X-Men. Brennan placed third in the age 18-19 race with a time of 9.59, while McKenna was fifth I the age 20+ race with a 9.66 showing.

McKenna also competed in the high jump and long jump. With a 1.82m jump he was fourth in the high jump, following up with a fourth place 5.80m performance in the long jump.

Freshman Cameron Glover was third in both the high jump (age 18-19) and long jump (age 18-19) with a 1.67m high jump result and 5.41m in the long jump.

There was an AUS Relay Challenge held on Sunday, also at the Canada Games Centre. The X-Men did not enter teams in the 4x200m or 4x800m relays, though their 4x400m relay team came in first placed with a time of 3:24.35.

Mackenzie Munroe, Andrew Bain, Timothy Brennan and Matt Murphy made up the relay team that broke the previous StFX team record. The time also places them in the top ten in the country in that event.

Next on the schedule for the tracksters is the Subway AUS Championship scheduled for February 28th and March 1st at the Universite de Moncton.
