Capers shutout X-Men in AUS soccer action

Antigonish, NS - On the strength of two goals by Justin Maheu (Ottawa, ON) in the final 10 minutes, the Cape Breton University Capers earned a 2-0 road victory over the StFX X-Men Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium.

The sophomore forward was named Subway player of the match for his offensive effort.

During the early minutes of the match, in front of more than 300 fans, the X-Men had the best opportunities to open the scoring, with forward Jordan Roberts (Whitby, ON) thwarted on two occasions from close range by Caper keeper Josh Lines (Taunton, UK). On the third attempt to push it over the goal-line, freshman defender Stuart Heath (Belfast, Ireland) made a sliding clearing play for the Capers.

Lines, who earned the shutout, made back-to-back saves on Randy Ribeiro (Cambridge, ON) and Trevor Kwan in the first two minutes of the second half to preserve the then scoreless tie. Lines made a lunging deflection with his right hand to keep Kwan's rebound attempt off the Ribeiro shot from making its way inside the right goal post.

Despite giving up two goals, Sam Hutchison (Victoria, BC) also stood tall between the pipes for the X-Men. In the second half, he soared to deflect a free kick from Ian Greedy (Lower Sackville, NS) over the crossbar, which had deflected off the wall of X-Men defenders.

The Capers (4-2-1) return to action Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host the Memorial University Sea-Hawks  (3-3-1) in Sydney.

The X-Men (2-3-2) will travel to Wolfville Friday, Oct. 3 for a match-up with the Acadia Axemen (5-3-0) before hosting their Homecoming 2014 battle versus the Memorial University Sea-Hawks Sunday, Oct. 5. Match time is set for 2:15 at Oland Stadium.
