Charlottetown, PEI – The STFX X-Men opened the 2025-26 AUS hockey season on a winning note, skating to a 6-2 win on the road over the UPEI Panthers Friday night.
Six different X-Men found the back of the net as they held leads of 2-1 after the first and 5-1 after the second period, despite being outshot 31-29 in the game.
Brandon Casey opened the scoring 1:53 into the game, beating Panthers netminder Joe Rangers after taking the puck off an X face-off.
Cole Stewart made it a 2-0 STFX lead off helpers from Ryan Struthers and Jordan Hughesman.
The Panthers Donovan Arsenault got one back before the first period was over.
The X-Men then scored three unanswered goals in the second period, coming from Lucas Canning, Logan O'Neil and Ryan McGuire on the power play.
They opened up a 6-1 lead midway through the third period off a goal from Cameron Mercer.
Yanic Crête scored the second Panthers goal four minutes later but they could draw no closer as the X-Men sealed the 6-2 victory.
Patrick Leaver earned the win in the X net with 29 saves on the night.
STFX will be back in action Saturday night when they travel to Fredericton to take on the UNB REDS.
