Moncton, NB – The StFX X-Men scored two goals on their first two shots of the first period and then kept up the pace Friday evening to defeat the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-2 at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
Jeremiah Addison, 45 seconds into the game, then Adam Holwell, less than a minute later - both on precise shots - gave the visitors a 2-0 lead early in the game.
Alexis Roy reduced the lead to a single point at 7:36, but Adam Laishram, at 9:02, gave his team a two-goal lead.
The 3-1 StFX lead held up after the first period as the X-Men outshot the Aigels Bleus 11-7.
There was no scoring in the second period, and shots were the same as the first at 11-7 in favour of StFX.
Alexandre Jacob scored at 2:37 of the third period to give hope to the Aigles Bleus, who wore replica 1964-1966 jerseys.
Sam Studnicka, at the end of the third on an empty net, got the insurance goal for the X-Men to seal the 4-2 victory, their third in a row.
Blade Mann-Dixon saved 29 pucks for the win, while Étienne Montpetit handled 42 shots including 20 in the last stanza.
The X-Men were 0 for 1 on the power play and Moncton, 1 for 2.
With the win the X-Men improve to 11-11-3 on the season and with 26 points, sit in fifth place, one point behind the Aigles Bleus (10-9-6).
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday night. Moncton hosts the seventh place Dalhousie Tigers (5-17-2), while the X-Men travel to Fredericton to play the first place UNB Reds (21-4-0). Game time is 7:00 p.m. for both games.
