(Halifax, NS) On Friday afternoon at the Scotiabank Centre the Dalhousie Tigers beat the StFX X-Men 4-1 on Varsity Showdown Weekend. Corbin Boes (Saskatonn, SK) had a great performance in the Tigers net with 39 saves.

Holden Cook (Oshawa, ON) scored the lone goal of the first period at 11:34 on the power play for the X-Men. Kristoff Kontos (Penetanguishhene, ON) found Cook wide open in the slot who wristed a shot top corner past Boes. Defenceman Bronson Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, AB) also had a helper on the play.

The X-Men outshot the Tigers 15-7 in the opening frame as the 1-0 lead held.

AUS scoring leader Eric Locke (Toronto, ON) was rewarded with a penalty shot midway through the second period after being tripped by Jesse Lussier (Ottawa, ON) while on a quick break in alone, but Boes stood tall, keeping the deficit at one.

On a scramble play in front of the StFX net JP Harvey (Cole Harbour, NS) whacked home a bouncing puck to tie the game up at 1-1. Tanner Williams Iroquois, ON) and Jackson Playfair Fort St. John, BC)were credited with the assists.

The two teams headed into the dressing room all tied up at 1-1 after 40 minutes of play. Shots favored the X-Men 12-7 in the second period, despite the Tigers going 0 for 4 on the power play.

Second year forward Mike Evelyn (Ottawa, ON) gave the Tigers their first lead of the game early on in the third period. Evelyn walked out from the corner and beat the sliding X-Men netminder Brandon Hope (Canton, MI) five hole. Williams picked up the helper on the play.

Andrew Wigginton (Sackville, NS) extended his point streak to four games and gave the Tigers a commanding 3-1 lead with just over seven minutes to play. He grabbed a rebound off a shot from Alex Cote (Montreal, QC) and pocketed it into the open X net. Steven Johnston (Sudbury, ON) also assisted.

Despite again outshooting the Tigers in the third period (14-9), the X-Men were unable to solves Boes. Playfair added an empty net goal in the dying seconds.

Tigers forward Tanner Williams was named the Subway player of the game and first star with three assists on the night. Evelyn and Boes were the second and third stars.

Dalhousie (7-13-4) next sees the ice on Friday, February 5th when they will host the St. Thomas Tommies (2-19-1) at the Halifax Forum.
