X-Men spoil Acadia’s season home opener with 3-1 win

WOLFVILLE, NS - The StFX X-Men spoiled the party at Acadia's season opener dropping the Axemen 3-1, despite being outshot 36-28.

The X-Men jumped on the scoreboard the first seven minutes into the opening period when forward Eric Locke (Toronto, ON) scored an unassisted goal from a shallow angle to the side of the net that was deflected high by an Axeman defender.

After a 16-12 shot advantage in the first period, the Axemen finally got on the scoreboard when forward Sam Fioretti (Calgary, AB) deflected a Daniel Pettersson (Toronto, ON) shot from the point to tie the game while on the man-advantage at 10:44 in the second period.

Seven minutes later, first year X-Men forward Holden Cook (Oshawa, ON) netted the eventual game winner at the end of a powerplay when he sent the puck to the back of the net on a beautiful feed from defenseman Nathan Chialitti (Maple, ON).

StFX forward Kristoff Kontos (Penetanguishene, ON) scored an insurance goal 32 seconds into the third period to seal the 3-1 victory on the road in Wolfville.

Drew Owsley repelled 35 Acadia shots and was rewarded with the Subway player of the game honor, while Axemen goaltender Brandon Glover posted 25 saves on 28 shots.

Next on the AUS schedule sees Acadia host Moncton and St. Thomas on October 16th and 17th, while StFX travels to UNB and UPEI on the same dates.
