Memorial Sea-Hawks edge out X-Men 85-79 in a closely contested game at The Fieldhouse Friday night
St. John's, NF – The Memorial Sea-Hawks edged out the STFX X-Men 85-79 in a closely contested game at The Fieldhouse Friday night, pulling away in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
The teams traded baskets early, with Memorial leading 23-22 after the first quarter. STFX struggled in the second quarter, shooting just 33.3% from the field and 16.7% from three-point range, but Memorial didn't capitalize, scoring only 12 points themselves. At halftime, the teams were tied with 35 points apiece.
The X-Men came out firing in the third quarter, shooting a red-hot 72.2% from the field and dropping 33 points. However, Memorial managed to stay within striking distance with 27 points of their own. The X-Men were up 68-62 through three quarters.
Memorial took control in the final frame, outscoring STFX 23-11 as a cold 35.7% field goal percentage hurt the X-Men down the stretch.
Flynn Boardman-Raffet scored 19 points for the Sea-Hawks, while adding 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Norm Burry also dropped 19 points, while Josh Reimer contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds. Jodick Moudiandambu put up 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Bennett Grumbach scored 19 points to lead the X-Men, while St. John's native Matt Pennell added 18 points in his home city. Keyonte Beals* contributed16 points and Koat Thomas was strong on the boards with 8 rebounds.
The X-Men were without league-leading scorer D.J. Jackson who did not make the trip, along with top rebounder Jeff Ngandu.
STFX and Memorial will be back in action Saturday night at 8:00 pm.
