X-Men falter to Capers

Sydney, NS – The StFX X-Men fell to the Cape Breton Capers 83-65 Tuesday evening in AUS action at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.

The Capers held the lead in the game from the opening basket as the X-Men lost their third consecutive game.

Cape Breton held leads of 23-14 after the first quarter and 42-26 at halftime.

They outscored the blue and white 29-17 in the third quarter to head into the fourth quarter with a 28 point advantage, in what would stand as their largest lead of the game.

The X-Men did outscore the Capers 22-12 in the fourth quarter though it proved to be too little, too late.

StFX shot only 37.5% from field goal range (24-64), while the Capers were 31 for 62 at 50.0%. Cape Breton won the battle of the boards out-rebounding the X-Men 48-21.

In a well balanced scoring attack, Cape Breton had five athletes in the double scoring digits. Arild Geugjes scored 18 points off the bench and added 5 rebounds.

Meschack Lufile netted 15 points and Sean McCormick had a double-double evening with 12 points and 13 rebounds while dishing out 4 assists.

Seth Amoah and Tevoun Jackson each scored 10 points apiece. Amoah also had 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

Leading the X-Men was Jordan Tyrrell who scored a game-high 25 points, along with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Freshman guard Roydell Clarke scored 16 points for X off the bench and added a pair of steals. Cameron Walker contributed 8 points.

With the four-point victory, the Capers improve to 6-6 on the season and currently sit in a three-way tie for second place and only two points back of first place UNB (9-2), their next opponent on the AUS schedule. CBU will meet the Varsity Reds Friday night, January 23rd in Fredericton.

The X-Men (3-8) will host the Acadia Axemen (3-7) on Friday night in an 8:00 pm tip-off at the StFX Oland Centre. Both teams are tied for sixth spot in the AUS standings with eight points apiece.
