2016 AUS winter meetings wrap up in Halifax
(HALIFAX, N.S.) – Atlantic University Sport wrapped up its annual winter meetings this past week at the Westin Nova Scotian in Halifax, N.S.
Phil Currie, executive director of Atlantic University Sport, chaired the meetings, attended by representatives of all eleven member institutions.
The work that takes place at these meetings typically includes receiving reports from the various AUS committees, continuing work on the development of the 2016-17 playing schedules and reviewing motions that come from coaches associations.
In addition to the above, highlights of other items discussed at these meetings are as follows:
AUS men’s hockey increases regular season schedule to 30 games, returns to divisional play
The AUS board of directors supported a recommendation from the management council to move to a 30-game regular season schedule beginning in the 2016-17 season.
This will see a return to divisional play with Acadia, Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s and StFX competing in one division while Moncton, St. Thomas, UNB and UPEI will make up the other division.
Teams will play three home and away games within their division for a total of 18 games, and will play the four teams outside their division three times (2 home + 1 away or 1 home + 2 away) for a total of 12 games. The home/away rotation of games outside divisions will alternate every year.
The three top teams in each division will qualify for post-season play. The format for the post-season match-ups as well as the names of the divisions will be determined at the AUS annual general meeting in May.
The last season AUS men’s hockey played in divisions was 1999-00. The league has been participating in a single division, 28-game format since the 2000-01 season.
2016 fall schedules ratified and AUS championship hosts announced:
As the scheduling process for the 2016-17 season progresses, the following dates and locations have been confirmed for the fall AUS championship events:
- StFX University will host the 2016 Subway AUS cross country championship, October 29, 2016.
- The University of New Brunswick will host the 2016 Subway AUS men's soccer championship, November 3-6, 2016.
- Cape Breton University will host the 2016 Subway AUS women's soccer championship, November 3-6, 2016.
The drafts of the 2016 fall schedules were ratified and will be released and posted on the AUS website next week.
