Gaiters claim Bigg Bowl title with win over X-Men
Gaiters QB Justin Quirion leads Bishop’s to a 29-3 Bigg Bowl win over X-Men
LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Quarterback Justin Quirion threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns on 28-of-36 passing to lead the Bishop's Gaiters to a 29-3 win over the STFX X-Men Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field. The victory secured Bishop's second consecutive Bigg Bowl title.
Mathieu Bellavance scored two Gaiters touchdowns—one rushing and one receiving—highlighting a balanced offensive attack that saw Bishop's rack up 477 total yards. Noah Blais added a 45-yard touchdown reception, while Timote Nehma-Lacasse hauled in six catches for 70 yards.
The Gaiters' defense held the X-Men to just 81 total yards and forced two interceptions. X-Men quarterback Sam Tremblay - stepping in for a sidelined Silas Fagnan – was 3-19 for 48 yards as the X-Men struggled on offense. Malcolm Bussey had 7 carries for 16 yards on the ground.
The lone X-Men scoring came on a 36 yard field goal by Payton Plesh in the second quarter.
The Gaiters were up 15-3 at halftime and held the X-Men off the scoresheet in the second half.
STFX linebacker Owen Watrych received player of the game recognition for his team, putting up 10 tackles in the game, including a sack. Nathan Cayouette had 6.5 tackles.
With the loss the X-Men drop to 2-1 on the season and are now tied for second place in the AUS standings with the Gaiters. STFX will host the first place Saint Mary's Huskies (3-0) next Saturday, September 20th at 2:00 pm.
