Willems and Hadley earn AUS football athlete of the week honours

Name: Justin Quirion
University: Bishop's University
Position: Quarterback

Academic program: Education

Bishop's University quarterback Justin Quirion is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15, 2024.

Quirion, an Education student in his third year of eligibility, led the Gaiters to a decisive 70-7 victory over the Acadia Axemen this past weekend. He connected on 15-of-18 pass attempts for 270 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for his own major – all in the first half of play.

The product of Saint Georges, Que., leads the AUS in passing yards (982) and passing touchdowns (6).

Saturday's win kept Bishop's on top of the AUS standings with a perfect 3-0 record, as they head into this coming weekend's matchup at Mount Allison. Game time is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. ADT.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Name: Zech Willems
University: STFX
Position: Defensive Lineman
Hometown: Tiny, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Fourth
Academic program: Arts
Height and weight: 6'2, 245 lbs.

STFX defensive lineman Zech Willems is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15, 2024.

Willems played a key role in his team's 34-7 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties this past Saturday, picking up a combined 5.5 tackles – including five solo tackles and a sack for a loss of four yards.

His 16 tackles are tops amongst all X-Men defenders this season.

STFX returns to the field this Friday night, as they take on the host Saint Mary's Huskies under the lights at Huskies Stadium at 7 p.m. ADT.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Name: Ben Hadley
University: STFX
Position: Kicker
Hometown: Halifax, NS
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: Business Administration
Height and weight: 6'2, 190 lbs.

STFX kicker Ben Hadley is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15, 2024.

The fifth-year kicker from Halifax was perfect on Saturday afternoon, connecting on all four field goal attempts and all three extra-point attempts, as his X-Men defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 34-7.

In the second quarter, Hadley re-wrote the X-Men history book by booting a 55-yard field goal to set a new school record. He also added field goals of 18, 31 and 37 yards in the victory.

Hadley's X-Men are in action this Friday night as they head to Halifax for a battle with the host Saint Mary's Huskies. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ADT.
