Jim Daley to join X-Men football coaching staff

Antigonish, NS— X-Men football head coach Gary Waterman is pleased to announce that seasoned CFL coach Jim Daley will be joining the X-Men football coaching staff as their Special Teams Coordinator for the 2015 varsity season.

"I am extremely thrilled to add Jim Daley to the StFX football program," comments Coach Waterman. "His resume speaks for itself. He has extensive experience in all three phases of the game, and will add tremendous knowledge and value to our entire staff."

"Jim brings a passion to the game that our student-athletes will see every day. His work ethic, fiery spirit and commitment to excellence will pay immediate dividends with our special teams. This hiring shows our school's commitment to building a nationally competitive football program."

With experience coaching every level of football in Canada over the past 38 years, Daley joins the X-Men program after having to turn down the Toronto Argonauts offer in January to return as their Special Teams Coordinator due to health reasons. He has since received a clean bill of health and has committed to the X-Men coaching staff for the 2015 AUS season, leaving the door open for a future return to the CFL should an opportunity arise.

Coach Daley has an extensive background with the CFL, having been a coach and administrator in the league since 1991. He has experience as a head coach, positional coach, along with serving in defensive, offensive and special teams coordinator positions. Prior to his most recent stint as special teams coordinator in Toronto, he was the special teams coordinator in Hamilton in 2012 where he helped set CFL special teams records.

A native of Ottawa who resides in Calgary in the off-season, Coach Daley served as CFL head coach with Winnipeg (2004-05) and Saskatchewan (1996-98), guiding the Roughriders to the 1997 Grey Cup game. His Roughriders appointment marked the first time a former CIS or CJFL head coach earned a CFL head coaching position. Daley was the head coach of the University of Ottawa and also spent time as an assistant coach with Carleton prior to joining the CFL ranks. He led the Ottawa Sooners to a 1984 CJFL championship as their head coach.

His CFL coaching highlights saw him win a Grey Cup championship in 2001 as a member of Calgary's coaching staff, and Coach Daley appeared in the title game again as Saskatchewan's Special Teams Coordinator in 2010. Over the past 11 years in the CFL, Daley has coached the CFL Outstanding Special Teams Player on three occasions including Keith Stokes (Winnipeg), Chris Williams (Hamilton) and Swayze Waters (Toronto). In 2007, Daley was hired by the CFL front office as their Senior Advisor of Football Operations & Officiating.

Coach Daley will be joining the X-Men program prior to pre-season training camp in late August.
