Seven STFX cross country track athletes off to Canada Games

Seven current members of the STFX Cross Country Track team have been selected to represent their province at the upcoming Canada Games in Niagara, Ont. in August.

Six members of the X-Women team qualified at the recent Athletics NS Track and Field Canada Games Trials Meet held in Stellarton, N.S. as they met the standards to be named to the 2022 team.

Aidan MacDonald (Arisaig, NS) will be competing in the 800m, Eileen Benoit (Windsor, NS) in the 1550m, while Allie Sandluck (Thorburn, NS) and Siona Chisholm (Antigonish, NS) both qualified for the 5000m. X-Women athletes Breanna Sandluck (Thorburn, NS) and Mairin Canning (Antigonish, NS) will be competing in the steeplechase, with Breanna also being named team captain for the provincial squad.

X-Women alumnus Jane Hergett will represent Nova Scotia in the 800m, with fellow alumnus Paige Chisholm representing PEI in the steeplechase and 1500m events.

Fourth year X-Men runner Luc Gallant (Wellington, PE) will represent PEI at the Canada Games in the 5000m race. Former X-Men Skeets Greene (Halifax, NS) qualified for the long jump event.  

The Canada Games are scheduled for August 6-20 in Niagara, Ont. with the track events taking place the second week.    

STFX Cross Country Track head coach Eric Gillis notes, "We are very proud of the athletes who made the Canada Games team and it is a sign of the depth of our STFX program, especially on the women's side as our runners qualified for a lot of the available distance spots."
