StFX runners open 2016 season at Maine meet

Brunswick, ME – The X-Men and X-Women cross country teams opened their 2016 competitive season by racing at the Bowdoin Invitational meet in Brunswick, Maine on Saturday afternoon. The X-Men placed first in their 8k race while the X-Women came second in their 5k event.

The X-Men had five runners in the top six finishers including Scott Donald, Calvin DeWolfe and Alex Neuffer who placed 1-2-3. Donald's winning time was 25:08.02 while DeWolfe and Neuffer finished 25:15.89 and 25:19.01.

Alex Cyr (25:29.53) and Angus Rawling (26:10.89) placed fifth and sixth while freshman X runner Addison Derhak (27:05.76) was 12th overall. Warren Ferguson (27:59.68) in 22nd, Matt Eliot (28:41.17) in 29th and Ryan Fuller (30:03.87) in 36th rounded out the X-Men finishers amongst the field of 50.

The X-Men had a team score of 17, bettering Bowdoin College (38), University of New England (95) and Emmanuel (102).

On the women's side, Bowdoin claimed top honors with 20 points, while the X-Women and the University of New England each scored had 56 but the X-Women earned the second place nod after confirming tie breaker placements. Emmanuel (124) and Lyndon State (149) rounded out the team standings.

Liz MacDonald was the top X-Women runner, coming in third place overall with a time of 18:58.73. Bowdoin runners Sarah Kelley (18:47.68) and Anne McKee (18:49.81) were first and second, respectively.

Freshman Paige Chisholm (19:37.92) was 11th for StFX, while teammates Zoe Johnston (19:45.40), Heidi MacDonald (19:47.90) and Hana Marmura (19:50.33) were 14th, 15th and 16th.

Rounding out the X-Women results were Olivia MacDonald (20th, 19:56.40), Catherine Thompson (21st, 20:00.93), Ashley Robson (23rd, 20:26.44), and Ellen Burnett (27th, 20:47.61) amongst the field of 80 competitors.

StFX runners will next see action on Saturday, September 24th when they travel to New Brunswick for the Moncton Invitational.
