X-Women clinch AUS playoff berth in 1-1 tie with Mounties

(Sackville, N.B.) – The Mount Allison Mounties and StFX X-Women battled a closely fought game to finish 1-1 on Alumni Field Friday evening.

With the single point earned the X-Women (4-1-4) punched their ticket to the AUS championship. The six-team tournament is scheduled for November 3-6 in Cape Breton.  The Mounties (1-6-2) are currently in ninth place. Cape Breton,  Acadia and Memorial have also clinched playoff berths with two spots remaining.

The StFX X-Women lead the attack and held on to possession for most of the first half of the game.  However, Mounties attacker Katherine Ollerhead was left alone near the 20th minute and fired off a great shot into the bottom right of the net.

The X-Women continued their strong offensive with multiple give-and-goes as well as crosses from each flank.  Mount Allison goalie Claire West was strong in her challenges and was able to keep the StFX offense at bay. The Mounties were also able to counter StFX with long balls sent to the corner flags.

The second half saw even more attack from the StFX team but the Mounties defense held strong until the 70th minute. X-Women midfielder Alix Bruch kicked a long corner into the box to meet her teammate Kelsey Ellis's head for a goal.

The game picked up in intensity after StFX's goal but neither side could produce another goal.

The next game for the Mounties is a home game on against Memorial University on Sunday at 1pm. The X-Women will travel to Fredericton on Sunday afternoon for a 2:00 pm game against UNB.
