X-Women start season with US exhibition road swing

The StFX X-Women soccer team kicked off the season with a pair of exhibition road matches in the northeastern United States.

The blue and white wrapped up the trip with a 2-0 win over Southern New Hampshire University Monday afternoon (Aug. 29).

"Olivia Wilkie (Rosemere, QC) led a much improved defensive performance and Mercy Myles (Accra, Ghana) dominated midfield in a solid match for the X-Women," head coach Graham Kennedy said.

"Although there were a few breakdowns in our attacking play, we showed real progress."

Logan Lee-Knight (Calgary, AB), on a free kick, and Chloe Brennan (Brookside, NS) scored for the blue and white.

The X-Women opened the excursion with a 4-0 loss Saturday afternoon (Aug. 27) to Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

"This was a game where the score definitely didn't reflect the quality of our play," Kennedy said.

"We had good control of the game for long stretches, but with only three days of practice and several new players, we just lacked execution in key areas of our team defending.

"Overall, a solid first half and lots of positives," he added.

The X-Women will wrap up the exhibition schedule versus the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics Saturday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m., at StFX Stadium.

The X-Women open AUS regular season action when they host the UPEI Panthers (Saturday, Sept. 10) and the UNB Varsity Reds (Sunday, Sept. 11).

Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. at StFX Stadium.
