Soccer X-Women open season with win and tie

The X-Women soccer team opened up the AUS season with a win and a tie while on the road this past weekend. Saturday they defeated Moncton 2-1 then followed with a 1-1 draw to UNB on Sunday afternoon.

Coaching in his first season with the X-Men, head coach Graham Kennedy commented, "We played together and played hard for 90 minutes of each game, and came out with four well-earned points."

"Our team shape and positioning were excellent and we moved the ball out of the back consistently against pressure. Our midfield play was very good at times and our movement off the ball is improving every game. Up front our play has been good on the counter attack and we are starting to link up more with midfield. We're making solid progress to date."

Freshman midfielder Brittany Parks from Gore, N.S. scored the game winner in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Moncton. Her goal came in the 80th minute off a penalty kick.

Moncton had opened the scoring early in the game as Donya Salomon-Ali tallied in the third minute. StFX's Mary MacDonald, a second year winger from Kingston, Ont. scored the equalizer just six minutes later.

She earned Subway Player of the Game honors for her game play.

Maris Miller and Nicole MacDonald split the time in the StFX net for the victory.

In Sunday's 1-1 tie with the Varsity Reds in Fredericton, MacDonald made seven saves in the X net, playing the entire 90 minutes.

UNB's Brianna Ford opened the scoring in the game with a goal late in the first half in the 40th minute. The 1-0 lead held until X-Women freshman forward Logan Lee-Knight, a Calgary native, scored the equalizer in the 80th minute.

Varsity Reds Paige Vincent received player of the game honors.

Next on the schedule for the X-Women (1-0-1) is a pair of home games on September 14th and 15th. Saturday they host Acadia (1-1-0) at 2:00 pm, followed by a Sunday game against UPEI (1-0-1), also at 2:00.
