2006 SEASON RECAP

The StFX X-Women won thier first ever national title in team history with a close 10-5 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the championship game in London, Ontario. They also defeated the host Western squad 13-5 in the semifinals after a posting a 1-1 record in round robin play. The X-Women defeated Waterloo 45-0 and lost to Guelph 15-3 but got their redemption in the championship game.

Freshman standout Ghislaine Landry, a CIS All-Canadian, was named to the tournament all-star team, along with captain Laura Foreman, Ashley Ward and Kirsten Sample.

The StFX X-Women are nine-time defending AUS champions - making them the only team to win the AUS championship since the inception of the women's rugby league. They were undefeated in regular season play with a 5-0-1 record, the only blemish occuring against their AUS championship opponent, the UPEI Panthers, ending in a 20-20 draw. The 2006 X-Women socred 236 points in six league games, while allowing only 35. The X-Women hosted the AUS championship game, defeating the Panthers 33-5 to claim the conference title. 

For the second straight year, four X-Women finished in the top six in AUS scoring, including AUS Rookie of the Year and AUS MVP GHislaine Landry, who also led the nation in scoring. Landry finished the AUS regualr season with 19 tries, totaling 95 points. Courtnay Malcolm was third among AUS scorers amassing 36 points on 13 converts and two tries. Dirctly behind Malcolm sat Kirsten Sample with 30 points on five tries. Rounding out the four leading scorers was Michelle Birks who tallied 20 points, including five converts and two tries. In addition to freshman standout Landry, the X-Women earned six AUS all-star selection, including the 2003 CIS Rookie of the Year Ashley Ward, the 2005 AUS Rookie of the Year laura Foreman, as well as Tamara Boiteau, Chelsey Penrice, Tanya Boiteau and Kirsten Sample.

Over the past nine years, the X-Women have compiled a 45-3-1 record in AUS league play and an impressive 18-0 record in playoff competition. Last year at the CIS championship, they defeated UVIC to claim fifth place. In total, the X-Women have one sixth place finish (1998), four fifth place finishes (2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), and three fourth place finishes (1999, 2003, 2004) in CIS championship competition.

In exhibition play in 2006, the X-Women traveled to Ottawa to play in the third installment of the McEwan Cup. During this year's competition the X-Women were victoroius over the McGill Martlets and Ottawa Gee Gees to claim the Cup. The McEwan Cup was established by McGill University in 2004 in recognition of the McEwan family who donated land for McGill Athletics playing fields.
