X-Women rugby dominate in exhibition tournament

The defending AUS champion X-Women rugby team hit the pitch in pre-season exhibition action Saturday afternoon in Truro at the AUS invitational tournament and showed that they are ready to play this season. The U SPORTS 2017 bronze medalists defeated Saint Mary's 95-0 and Acadia 52-15.

In the first game of the day against Saint Mary's the X-Women had nine different athletes score tries, including four from second year flanker Claudia Fulton (Aylesford, NS). The X-Women lead 34-0 at halftime.

Single tries were scored by Maddie Harroun (Halifax, NS), Kenadi Verge (Halifax, NS), Katie Pentz (Trenton, NS) Kate Flanagan (Saint John, NB), and Katherine Brennan (Bedford, NS), while Alex Hamilton (Eastern Passage, NS), Lucy Killacky (Wolfville, NS), and Keeley MacCuish (Trenton, NS) each crossed the try line twice.

Freshman center Kate Harmon (Ottawa, ON) rounded out the scoring by kicking 10 conversions.

In their second game of the day the X-Women played rival Acadia and were up 31-10 at halftime, on route to the 52-15 victory.

Scoring was handled by Joanna Alphonso (Ajax, ON) and Olivia Demerchant (Bedell, NB) who each scored a pair of tries, along with single tries from Sophie Parker (Windsor, NS), Alison Blanchard (Herring Cove, NS), Meghan Buchanan (Lethbridge, AB) and Sammy Nadeau (Bewdley, ON).

Jacqui Salvatore (Scarborough, ON) kicked six conversions.

The X-Women begin defense of their AUS title at home on Friday, September 7th when regular season actions at 7:00 pm against Saint Mary's.
