Taylor named AUS athlete of the week for second consecutive week

Emma Taylor of the St. Francis Xavier University women's rugby team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Nov. 2, 2014.

A fifth-year business student from Scotsburn, N.S., Taylor was named tournament MVP as she helped lead the X-Women to the CIS national championship title in Guelph on the weekend.

The veteran lock scored two tries in the 43-34 victory over McMaster in the championship game and had three tries, including the game-winning try on the last play of the game, in StFX's 27-24 win over Western that advanced them to the final.

A CIS tournament all-star and CIS all-Canadian, Taylor also scored a pair of tries and was the player of the game in the X-Women's 41-17 win over Alberta in their first game of the tournament.

Last week, Taylor was named AUS and CIS athlete of the week for her role in leading the X-Women to their 17th consecutive AUS championship title. She scored two tries the AUS championship game and was named AUS championship MVP. Leading into the AUS championship weekend, Taylor was named AUS MVP and earned a place on the conference all-star team for the third consecutive season.

Oliver Jones of the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds men's soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Nov. 2, 2014.

A third-year kinesiology student from London, U.K. , Jones was named the most valuable player of the 2014 Subway AUS men's soccer championship hosted this past weekend in St. John's, Nfld.

The striker, who was named to the AUS first team all-star squad at Thursday's championship banquet, posted a goal in UNB's 5-0 semifinal win Saturday over the host Memorial Sea-Hawks.

En route to securing the Varsity Reds' second consecutive AUS banner Sunday, Jones netted both of UNB's goals in their 2-1 win over the Cape Breton Capers in the championship final.

The Varsity Reds have now earned their chance to compete in the CIS men's soccer championship being hosted this weekend by the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
