X-Women win battle of AUS rugby powerhouses

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Touted as the match between the undefeated, the CIS No. 3 ranked StFX X-Women outlasted the CIS No. 7 ranked Acadia Axewomen 45-17 Saturday night. With the win the X-Women improve to 3-0 and gain sole possession of first place atop the AUS conference.

StFX broke out into a quick 21-0 lead on trys from Breanna Allison, Tasha McKenzie and Danielle Robb between the 16 minute and the 28 minute mark. All three trys were converted. With no time left on the clock in the opening half, the Axewomen finally got on the scoreboard when Janna Slevinsky added five points unconverted to close the first half 21-5 in favor of StFX.

Four minutes into the second half, Tasha McKenzie scored her second try of the night (unconverted). The Axewomen scored two trys five minutes apart when Michaela Haley and Tamara Dondi, along with a Erin Beazley convert, closed the gap to 26-17.

StFX would then go on to score 19 unanswered points in the closing 10 minutes of the second half to put the game away and capture the 45-17 win in the first meeting of both teams this AUS season. Catharine MacKeigan, Breanna Allison and Miranda Sample scored the final X-Women trys.

Acadia's Erin Beazley scored one conversion, while StFX's Emma Taylor kicked three conversions and teammates Anna Simonds and Lauren Agnew each booted one conversion apiece.

Next on the AUS schedule has StFX travelling to UPEI on Sunday, Sept. 28th, while the Axewomen head to Saint Mary's next Friday night.
