X-Women open season with 96-0 shutout over Huskies

Halifax, NS – The AUS champion and CIS No. 4 ranked X-Women rugby team got out to a dominating start to the 2014 season, defeating the Saint Mary's Huskies 96-0 Saturday afternoon at the new Huskies Stadium.

The reigning 16-time conference champions got out to an early 14-0 lead midway through the first half and never looked back. They increased their lead to 50-0 lead at halftime.

The X-Women were led in scoring by veteran fifth year lock Emma Taylor who scored three tries.

Flankers Kaitlin VanSteeg and Brooke Newsome each scored two tries while freshman prop Joanna Alphonso also crossed the try line on two occasions.

Twelve different X-Women contributed to the scoring for the shutout win. Single tries were scored by Catharine MacKeigan, Zahra Batool, Lauren Agnew, Beckie Clark, Breanna Allison, Charity Marchischuk and Jaelei Meyer.

Third year winger Lauren Agnew also booted five conversions to contribute 15 points on the day. Fullback Dominique Lalande rounded out the scoring with three conversions for the X-Women.

Next on the schedule for StFX is their home opening match on Sunday, September 14th versus the UPEI Panthers. Game time is 2:00 pm at StFX Oland Stadium. The Huskies will travel to Wolfville, NS on Sunday to face the Acadia Axewomen, also at 2:00 pm.
