Four X-Women win Nations Cup with Canadian senior women's rugby team

Four members of the CIS champion X-Women rugby team helped team Canada win the recent Nations Cup in Denver, Colorado. Magali Harvey, Tyson Beukeboom, Amanda Thornborough and Sara Kaljuvee were all members of the Canadian senior women's team that won their first ever Nations Cup title on August 10th.

The Canadians defeated England 27-13 in the championship game to take home the victory. Harvey, a native of Quebec City, scored three conversions and two penalty goals for 12 points for Canada in the victory. All four X-Women played in the final game.

The tournament took place between July 30 and Aug. 10 in Denver and featured Canada, the USA, England and South Africa.

In round robin action the Canadians first faced England where they posted a close 29-25 victory, marking the first Canadian win over England in 20 years. Harvey scored two tries for Canada in the win.

In their second round robin match, Canada fell to the USA by a score of 29-17. Harvey contributed one conversion in the losing effort.

Canada came back with an explosive 53-15 victory over South Africa, sealing their berth in the championship game as they finished with the best point differential in the tournament. Harvey padded her scoring stats with another two tries and four conversions. Recent X-Women graduate Amanda Thornborough also scored a try in the game.

The tournament capped off a busy season of international competition for several X-Women. Harvey, also a member of the senior women's rugby sevens team, competed in the rugby sevens World Cup in Russia in early July where Canada won silver. Harvey and Thornborough won the Hong Kong sevens tournament this past March with team Canada, while Kaljuvee, along with fellow StFX teammates Dani Robb and Natalie Lesco won the U20 Nations Cup in London, England with the Canadian U20 national team.

The 2013 StFX X-Women will begin defense of their CIS national title when they begin exhibition play on September 1st, hosting McGill in a 2:00 pm game at the StFX Oland Centre. The AUS regular season starts on Sept. 6th
