X-Women hang on for 4-3 win over Moncton
The STFX X-Women extended their win streak to five games with a 4-3 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleues on Friday night at the Keating Centre. Second star of the night Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth, NS) had two goals on the night, the second of which was her 50th goal in a STFX uniform.
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women extended their win streak to five games with a 4-3 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleues on Friday night at the Keating Centre. Second star of the night Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth, NS) had two goals on the night, the second of which was her 50th goal in a STFX uniform.
Les Aigles Bleues enjoyed the majority of scoring chances early on, but STFX goalie Brooklyn Oakes (Richmond Hill, ON) stood tall. The X-Women's forecheck then went to work and it provided dividends 10 minutes into the opening period, with rookie Kameryn Lahey (Catalone, NS) tipping home a point shot by Bree MacPherson (Antigonish, NS) after player of the game Ashlyn Garnett (Dartmouth, NS) dug the puck out of the corner.
STFX continued to extend their lead, but Annick Boudreau (Dieppe, NB) kept it a one-coal game. Shots at the end of the period were 14-6 in favour of the X-Women.
Burbidge made it a 2-0 game 25 seconds into the second period, picking up a loose puck at the Moncton blueline, cutting to the slot, and firing a shot home.
Shani Rossignol (Notre Dame de Lourdes, MB) made it a 2-1 game six minutes later, picking up a pass from Isadora Quirion (Saint-Gedeon de Beauce, QC) just inside the X blue line, and snapped one top shelf.
The pace of play picked up in the latter half of the period, but neither team added to their score. Shots at the end of the second period were 30-16 in favour of the home team.
Burbidge scored her second goal of the night about five minutes into the third period, driving home a one-timer off a pass from Mackenzie Lothian (Alliston, ON) and Terryn Mozes (Kanata, ON) while on a 5-on-3. The X-Women made it a three-goal lead four minutes later, with Garnett potting a rebound chance after a great rush from McKiya Mazur (Russell, MB).
Maritza Labrie (St. Quentin, NB) cut the lead in half four minutes later, with a high, short side shot, with assists going to Emily Gravelle (Callander, ON) and Rossignol, who earned third star of the game after picking up two points on the night.
Sara Regimbald (Embrun, ON) made it 4-3 with four minutes left in the game, with a shot from in close, but Moncton couldn't find the equalizer.
Shots at the end of the game were 41-24 in favour of STFX. Oakes made 21 saves in the win, while Boudreau made 37 saves while getting tagged with the loss.
The X-Women continue their weekend home stand with a game versus St. Thomas tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Charles V Keating Centre. Moncton continues their road trip tomorrow, when they will land in Halifax to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies.
