X-Women hockey forward Daley Oddy to begin play in international tourney

ANTIGONISH, NS – X-Women hockey forward Daley Oddy is set to begin international competition this weekend at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The 5'8" fourth year StFX Human Kinetics student from Cranbrooke, BC is a member of the Canadian women's team, consisting of all-star athletes from across the country from varying U SPORTS teams. She and Kelty Apperson from the St. Thomas Tommies are the lone AUS athletes on the squad.

This marks the second time that Oddy, a three-time AUS all-star, has represented Canada at a Winter Universiade, having previously won a silver medal at the 2015 Games in Grenada. The Canadian women have won gold in every other tournament since the discipline's inception in 2009.

In 19 games played to date in the AUS women's hockey season, Oddy is currently tied for second overall in AUS scoring with Apperson and the pair are third in U SPORTS national scoring. She has 23 points (12G, 11A) and a +18 rating with three power play goals and one game-winning goal.

The Winter Universiade is a biennial international multi-sport event open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.

Canada opens the women's competition Saturday, January 28th at 4:30 p.m. local (6:30 a.m. AST) against China.

Also of note, X-Men hockey alumnus Nathan Chiarlitti will be competing in the same Winter Universiade for the Canadian men's team. Chiarlitti graduated from StFX last May and was a key member of the 2016 AUS champion X-Men team, having played at X for the past three seasons. The fourth year defenseman from Maple, Ont. is a member of the McGill Redmen this year, enrolled in their Master of Science (Kinesiology & Phys. Ed) program.

Chiarlitti, the 2016 national CIS Randy Gregg award winner, is an alternate captain with the Canadian men's team that consists of all-star athletes from the OUA conference. The Canadian men's squad is looking to add their fifth gold medal after claiming bronze in the previous Games. They open competition on Monday, January 30th at 7:30 p.m. local (9:30 a.m. AST) against USA.
