X-Women lose overtime game to Huskies

Halifax, NS – The X-Women hockey team dropped a close 3-2 game in overtime to the Saint Mary's Huskies Saturday afternoon in pre-season exhibition play. The Huskies also bettered the X-Women on Thursday evening in Antigonish 4-2.

The teams played to a scoreless first period on Saturday with StFX having a slight edge in shots, 9-8 in the opening frame.

Mary Worndl broke the goose egg, scoring for the Huskies 8:26 into the second period as Breana Lanceleve and Sarah Douglas had the helpers.

Emily Power tied the game at 1-1 as she netted a goal for the X-Women with only one second left in the second period. Freshmen teammates Becky Higgs and Lindsey Donovan had the assists as the X-Women outshot the Huskies 8-4 in the period.

The third period saw Daley Oddy give the X-Women a one-goal edge as she tallied at 13:35 from Nicole Corcoran and Kara Power.

The Huskies came right back however, scoring just under a minute later as Worndl notched her second of the game. Lanceleve and Caitlyn Manning assisted.

Shots favored the X-Women 10-6 in the third period as the score remained 2-2 at the end of regulation.

The first five minutes of four-on-four overtime did not solve anything, but when switched to three-on-three play, Siobhan Birch scored the game winner for SMU at 8:01. Kiana Wilkenson picked up the assist on the final goal.

Rebecca Clarke earned the win between the pipes for the Huskies with 22 saves, while Carley Molnar (27 saves) took the loss in the StFX net. Final shots on goal favored the X-Women at 30-24.

The Huskies, who are 6-0 in pre-season play, next see action on Wednesday evening, October 5th when they will host Dalhousie at 7:00 pm in their final exhibition game.

The X-Women have concluded their pre-season games (0-3) will start AUS regular season action on Saturday, October 15th when they travel to Moncton for a 7pm game time. Their home opener is slated for Wednesday, October 19th at 7pm when Dalhousie will be in town.
