X-Women lose close game to Mounties

Sackville, N.B. - The CIS ranked No. 9 StFX X-Women (7-7) dropped a 4-3 decision to the Mount Allison Mounties (8-7) Sunday afternoon.

The visitors jumped to a two-goal advantage after the first period.

Just 27 seconds into the match-up, X-Women captain Taylor Dale (Oromocto, N.B.) tallied, on assists from Daley Oddy (Cranbrook, B.C.) and Heather Tillsley (Aurora, ON).

StFX doubled their lead with less than one minute remaining in the first stanza. At 19:26, Alanna Grossutti (Ottawa, ON) converted on a helper from Lydia Schurman (Summerside, PEI).

The X-Women out-shot the Mounties 14-6 in the opening period.

The hometown Mounties scored three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 3-2 edge after 40 minutes, including back-to-back markers from Mackenzie Lalonde (Ottawa, ON).

At 1:07, the senior forward converted on an assist from Shelby Colton (Kanata, ON).

On the power play, at 11:47, that tandem combined again to tie the contest.

At 17:42, the Mounties took their first lead, with Kara Anthony (Toronto, ON) tallying. Amanda Volcko (Halifax, NS) notched the lone helper to give Mount Allison a 3-2 edge.

Just 12 seconds into the third period, the X-Women pulled even on a goal from Kara Power (New Glasgow, NS), with her line-mates Oddy and Dale providing the assists.

At the 5:25 mark, Jennifer Bell (Miramichi, N.B.) scored the game-winner on an unassisted effort.

Keri Martin (Brampton, ON) made 27 saves for the win, while Pascale Daigle (Irishtown, NB) turned aside 21 shots in the loss. 

The Mounties will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 16, when they host the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues, beginning at 1:15 p.m.

On the same day, the X-Women will take the ice against the visiting St. Thomas Tommies. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. at the Keating Centre in Antigonish.
