Kara Power scores shootout winner as X-Women defeat Laurentian

Montreal, QC – The StFX X-Women skated to a 3-2 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in exhibition action at the Theresa Humes Memorial tournament, hosted by Concordia on Sunday afternoon. The CIS ranked No. 9 team needed a shootout to get the win as Kara Power scored the only goal in the shootout, securing the win for StFX.

The X-Women improve their tournament record to 1-1, having previously dropped a 4-1 decision to CIS No. 10 Ottawa on Saturday.

Lisa Downey scored with only 34 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2, sending it into overtime. Daley Oddy assisted on the late-game play. The five minute 4-on-4 period didn't decide anything, opening the door for Power's game winning goal in the shootout.

The Voyageurs opened the scoring in the game as Morgan McCann tallied only 33 seconds into the first period, assisted by Nicole Vigilanti. The goal was the only one of the opening period as shots favored 5-4 for the Voyageurs.

Sarah Bujold evened it up, scoring for the X-Women unassisted and on the power play at 11:14 of the second period.

Laurentian quickly regained their lead however, as Elissa Bertuzzi scored less than two minutes later, also unassisted.

Shots were 14-8 in favor of Laurentian in the second period.

The third period didn't see any goals materialize until the Downey marker on only StFX's second shot of the period.

Freshman goaltender Carly Molnar, red shirting for the blue and white this season, recorded the victory in the StFX net with 30 saves.

Final shots were 32-24 for Laurentian.

Laura Deller took the loss for the Voyageurs, who fall to 0-2 in tournament play.

StFX will play their final game of the tournament on Monday morning at 11:00 am EST when they face the Carleton Ravens.
