Huskies top X-Women 2-1

HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's Huskies (2-2) defeated the CIS ranked No. 8 StFX X-Women (2-2) in AUS hockey play Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the home team got on the board with an unassisted, power-play goal from Mary Worndl (Lunenburg, NS) at the 7:34 mark of the second period as she scored on a backhander.

At 12:12 of the middle frame, the Huskies doubled their advantage, on a Caitlyn Schell (Waterford, NS) marker from the slot with the assist from Brianna Soper (Oshawa, ON).

Late in the third period, with 1:09 remaining in regulation and goaltender Sojung Shin (Seoul, Korea) pulled for the extra attacker, Sarah Bujold (Riverview, NB) - on an assist from Nicole Halladay (Smith's Falls, ON) - sliced the deficit in half, but the X-Women could get no closer.

Bujold led the X-Women with seven shots on goal, while Kara Power (New Glasgow, NS) chipped in four.

Subway player of the game Rebecca Clark (Keswick, ON) made 22 saves for the win, while Sojung Shin (Seoul, Korea) turned aside 27 shots in the loss. 

The Huskies outshot the X-Women 18-3 in the first period, while the X-Women held a 12-4 edge in the final frame.

The X-Women will return to action Sunday, Oct. 25, at home, when they host the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus at the Keating Centre.

Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. in the 'Pink in the Rink' awareness game.

The Huskies will be back on the ice Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they face-off against the cross-town rival Dalhousie Tigers at 7 p.m.
