X-Women skate to home win over Tigers

Antigonish, NS - After falling behind 1-0, the StFX X-Women scored four unanswered goals in a 4-2 win over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers in exhibition hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Keating Centre.

"We played very well. We put together another strong 60 minutes," X-Women head coach David Synishin said.

He added his team was able to build on a great effort last night, when they defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-2 in overtime on the road.  "It was good to see again," Synishin said of the back-to-back quality efforts.

At 7:03 of the first period, Jesse Rietveld (Pelham, ON), from Joleen MacInnis (Whycocomagh, NS), opened the scoring for the Tigers.

Just more than one minute later, at 8:06, Sarah Bujold (Riverview, NB) tied the game. Daley Oddy (Cranbrook, BC) collected the lone assist on the power-play goal.

Late in the period, at 15:42, sophomore defender Nicole Halladay (Smith's Falls, ON) gave the X-Women their first lead – one they would not relinquish – on a set-up from second-year forward Jenna MacDonald (Osgoode, ON)

The X-Women doubled their advantage earlier in the second period, when Oddy tallied an unassisted marker at 1:56.

StFX took a three-goal advantage on a goal from senior forward Catherine Civitarese (Calgary, AB), with team captain Taylor Dale (Oromocto, NB) notching an assist.

Later in the second period, Rietveld, with her second of the game, cut the X-Women lead in half, on an assist from Tara Morning (Aurora, ON).

The teams played to a scoreless third period.

Carly Molnar of the X-Women made 15 saves for the victory, while Mati Barrett (Stittsville, ON) turned aside 29 shots in the loss.

The X-Women will open AUS regular season play Friday, Oct. 16, when they host the UPEI Panthers. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at the Keating Centre.
