Gee-Gees top men's basketball rankings for first time in history

OTTAWA (CIS) – For the first time in program history, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees are the top-ranked team in CIS men's basketball.

Although the Gee-Gees had the No. 1 seed heading into last year's CIS Final 8 tournament, this week marks the first time that they have topped the weekly national coaches' poll. Ottawa (9-0) achieved the feat thanks to a 68-66 home win over its archrivals, the Carleton Ravens (8-1), on Saturday night.

The Gee-Gees had spent the last 17 ranking periods at No. 2 behind Carleton, including the first six polls of 2014-15 and the last 11 of last season.

Since the start of the 2007-08 campaign, only one team other than Carleton, the UBC Thunderbirds, had reached the top of the charts in CIS men's hoops. The T-Birds were ranked No. 1 once in 2008-09, eight times in 2009-10 and once in 2012-13.

The reigning four-time national champion Ravens had led the other 94 rankings over that period, including the last 31 dating back to November of 2013. 

Ottawa and Carleton both have five league games scheduled before their next head-to-head meeting, the annual Capital Hoops Classic at Canadian Tire Centre on Feb. 6.

In other CIS sports, Windsor (women's basketball), Montreal (women's hockey), Alberta (men's hockey, women's & men's volleyball) and UBC (women's & men's swimming) all hold on to their No. 1 status this week.

Toronto (women) and Guelph (men) top the first track and field rankings of the season, while Brock opens at No. 1 in both women's and men's wrestling.
