CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#11)
Montreal moves up to No. 1 in women's hockey

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Montreal Carabins are the new team to beat in CIS women's hockey following a shocking shutout loss by the reigning national champion McGill Martlets, last Friday.

In other CIS sports, the Toronto Varsity Blues retake the lead in men's swimming, while Windsor (women's basketball), Carleton (men's basketball), UBC (women's swimming) and Alberta (men's hockey, women's volleyball & men's volleyball) all hold on to their pole position.

In women's hockey, the Martlets (4-1), who had topped the first five coaches' polls of the young campaign, were blanked 1-0 by Concordia last Friday despite outshooting the Stingers 27-15. It put an end to McGill's remarkable 57-game winning streak against its crosstown rival dating back to 2006.

The Martlets rebounded on Sunday with a 7-0 domination of Carleton, but the damage was done to their No. 1 status.

Meanwhile, the Carabins (4-1) joined McGill atop the RSEQ rankings thanks to a 7-2 win over Ottawa in their lone outing of the past week, on Saturday. Montreal was ranked No. 1 in three of 16 national polls last season, with McGill earning the nod every other week.

Montreal and McGill met in a memorable CIS championship final last March in Fredericton, where the Martlets prevailed in double overtime. The archrivals have battled once so far this season, on Oct. 24, with McGill winning 3-0. The Carabins will get a chance to avenge that loss on Nov. 21, this time on home ice.

CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#7)
Big shake-up behind top-ranked Bears

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men's hockey rankings for the seventh time in as many national polls this season.

The Bears (11-1) received all but one of the 15 first-place votes from the media panel this week, with the other nod going to the only remaining undefeated team in the country, the defending OUA champion Windsor Lancers (11-0), who move up one position to a season-high No. 3 in the new poll.

Rounding out this week's Top 10 are the No. 2 UNB Varsity Reds (8-1-1 / up one), No. 4 Saint Mary's Huskies (8-1-1 / up three), No. 5 UQTR Patriotes (9-1 / up one), No. 6 Calgary Dinos (9-3 / down one), No. 7 Acadia Axemen (7-3 / down five), No. 8 Carleton Ravens (8-2 / up one), No. 9 Mount Royal Cougars (7-5 / down one) and No. 10 Moncton Aigles Bleus (6-3-1 / no change).

The top-ranked Golden Bears extended their winning streak to 10 games over the weekend with a pair of road victories over Manitoba but got all they could handle from the Bisons in both contests, erasing a third-period deficit on Friday to prevail 3-2 and winning 4-2 the following night, including an empty net goal.

Meanwhile in the OUA, Windsor also survived a couple of scares on the road to extend its current win streak. The Lancers edged Ryerson 3-2 in double overtime on Friday, before scoring four times in the third period on Saturday to beat Toronto 6-5.

Alberta and Windsor hope to continue to roll this weekend against UBC (two games) and McGill, respectively.

The biggest losers in the new poll, the Acadia Axemen drop five spots following an 0-2 home stand that included a 3-2 loss to Saint Mary's and a 2-0 defeat at the hands of StFX.

Four Top-10 matchups are on the schedule this weekend, all in the AUS, including Saint Mary's at UNB and Acadia at Moncton on Friday, followed by Acadia at UNB and Saint Mary's at Moncton on Saturday. All games are set for 7 p.m. AST, live on AUStv.ca.
