X-Women hockey remain No. 8 in nation

CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#18)
Four new teams move up to No. 1

OTTAWA (CIS) – There are no less than four changes at the top in this week's CIS national rankings, with UBC (men's swimming), York (men's track & field), Trinity Western (men's volleyball) and Brock (men's wrestling) moving to No. 1 in their respective disciplines.

In other CIS sports, Windsor (women's basketball), Carleton (men's basketball), McGill (women's hockey), Calgary (men's hockey), UBC (women's swimming & women's volleyball), Guelph (women's track & field) and Brock (women's wrestling) all held on to the pole position.

In men's swimming, UBC moves past reigning CIS champion Toronto following a dominant performance at the Canada West championships. The Thunderbird men claimed the conference banner with a comfortable cushion over meet host Calgary, finishing with 941 points compared to 755 for the Dinos.

In men's track and field, York and Guelph both move ahead of last week's top-ranked squad, Windsor, after finishing 1-2 at the prestigious McGill Team Challenge, the largest indoor track meet in Canada. The Windsor men settled for sixth place at the competition.

In men's volleyball, Trinity Western is back at No. 1 following McMaster's first loss of the regular season, a five-set defeat at the hands of No. 7 Waterloo. The top-ranked Spartans, meanwhile, swept a two-game set at No. 5 Thompson Rivers to improve to 17-1 in league play.

In men's wrestling, Brock takes over from defending CIS champ Alberta, which had led the first two national rankings of the campaign.

CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#13)
No. 1 Calgary, No. 2 Alberta stay put despite rare loss

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Calgary Dinos and Alberta Golden Bears both suffered a rare loss over the past weekend but are still comfortably sitting in the top two positions in the new CIS men's hockey Top 10.

The Dinos (20-0-2) received 14 of 15 first-place votes and 149 points from the national media panel to remain at No. 1 for the fifth consecutive ranking period, dating back to early December. The Bears (19-2-1) tallied 134 points to keep their lead over the reigning University Cup champion UNB Varsity Reds (18-3-1), who earned the remaining first-place nod and 120 points.

The only changes in the 13th poll of the season see two previously unranked teams make their way among the nation's elite, the Western Mustangs (16-6) at No. 8 and the Moncton Aigles Bleus (13-8) at No. 10.

The No. 4 Acadia Axemen (17-2-3), No. 5 McGill Redmen (18-5-1), No. 6 UQTR Patriotes (18-4), No. 7 Carleton Ravens (16-5-1) and No. 9 Lakehead Thunderwolves (15-6-1) all stay put this week.

Top-ranked Calgary collected three out of a possible four points during a two-game road trip in Vancouver and is still the only team in the country without a loss in regulation with six contests remaining on their Canada West schedule. The Dinos dropped Friday's opener against UBC 3-2 in double overtime but rebounded on Saturday with a 3-1 win.

Alberta obtained similar results against Mount Royal to keep within striking distance of provincial rival Calgary in the Canada West race. The Golden Bears lost 4-3 in second OT on Friday and bounced back the following night with a convincing 6-1 decision.

All other Top-10 teams went 2-0 last weekend with the exception of Lakehead and Moncton, which both kept 1-1 records.

With three weeks to go in conference play, the race for first place is tight in all four CIS divisions.

Calgary leads Alberta by three points in Canada West. UNB and Acadia are tied atop the AUS standings. McGill has a one-point edge over UQTR in the OUA East and Western holds the same slim advantage over Lakehead in the OUA West.
