Brock, Alberta top inaugural wrestling rankings of season

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Brock University women and University of Alberta men, both reigning national champions, top the first wrestling rankings of the 2014 CIS season.

Brock, which claimed its second straight CIS banner last winter, opens ahead of Alberta, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Western in women's competition. On the men's side, Alberta, crowned last year for the first time since 1972, is ranked ahead of Brock, Western, Concordia and Saskatchewan.

CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#11)
Big Four keeps winning, OUA East teams move up

OTTAWA (CIS) – There are no changes at the top in the 11th weekly national poll of the CIS men's hockey season following another perfect weekend by the Big Four.

The University of Calgary Dinos (17-0-1) remain at No. 1 for the third straight ranking period after receiving 16 out of a possible 17 first-place votes and 169 points from the media panel. Once again following in order are the Alberta Golden Bears (16-2-0) with 149 points, the Acadia Axemen (15-1-2) with 141 and the remaining first-place nod, as well as the reigning University Cup champion UNB Varsity Reds (14-3-1) with 113 points.

Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 5 McGill Redmen (14-5-1 / up one position), No. 6 UQTR Patriotes (14-4-0 / up two), No. 7 Carleton Ravens (13-5-1 / up two), No. 8 Ryerson Rams (14-5-0 / up two), No. 9 Lakehead Thunderwolves (13-4-1 / down four) and No. 10 Queen's Gaels (12-2-5 / down three).

Calgary, Alberta, Acadia and UNB all went 2-0 over the past weekend.

The Dinos crushed Lethbridge 14-2 Friday before edging the Pronghorns 2-1 in overtime in Saturday's rematch. The Golden Bears swept archrival Saskatchewan 3-2 and 4-3. The Axemen beat Saint Mary's 5-1 and StFX 2-1. The V-Reds scored 4-2 victories over UPEI and Moncton.

Acadia and UNB clash for the third time this season Friday night at Fredericton. The AUS-leading Axemen won the first two duels of the campaign, 4-3 in a shootout at Fredericton on Nov. 15 and 5-1 at home on Nov. 30.

In Canada West action, Calgary hosts Manitoba for a pair Friday and Saturday, while Alberta travels to Vancouver to face UBC. With Queen's losing twice in regulation last weekend, the Dinos are now the only team in the country that has yet to lose in 60 minutes in league play.

In addition to the Acadia-UNB confrontation, three more Top-10 matchups are on this week's CIS schedule, including Queen's at McGill on Friday and Ryerson visiting Lakekead for a two-game set on Friday and Saturday.
