Hockey X-Women hang on for win over Moncton

The CIS No. 4 X-Women hockey team improved to 11-0 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues Friday evening at the StFX Keating Centre.

The X-Women had two goals in the second period off the sticks of Alex Normore and Schyler Campbell for the win, while Karine Roy replied for the Aigles Bleues, who fall to 4-9.

The teams played a defensive battle throughout the game with a low shot tally. The first period saw the X-Women outshoot the Aigles Bleues 6-5 as each team had a key scoring chance.

Moncton's Amelie Lariviere hit the cross bar midway through the opening frame, then Erin Brophy replied with a dinged cross bar for the X-Women four minutes later.

Shots in the second period were 5-5 with the X-Women coming out ahead on the score sheet. CIS leading scorer Normore converted a Daley Oddy pass on a two-on-one rush at 3:43 to get the X-Women on the board. Schyler Campbell also assisted.

Subway player of the game Campbell followed up with the second X marker at 7:44. After storming the Moncton net and having the loose puck bang around, Campbell pushed it in past Aigles Bleues netminder Emilie Bouchard. Oddy picked up her second helper of the night.

Roy's goal for the Aigles Bleues came on the power play at 11:37 of the third period off a rebound with Kaitlyn Gallaway and Danielle Eustace assisting.

The Aigles pressured for the equalizer for the remainder of the period and pulled Bouchard with just under a minute to play, but the AUS first place X-Women held on for the victory.

Freshman goalie Pascale Daigle earned her sixth win of the season in nets for StFX with 15 saves. Final shots registered at 16 apiece.

The X-Women (11-0) will travel to Halifax to take on the second place Saint Mary's Huskies (9-2) Saturday evening at 7:00 pm in their final regular season game of the first term.

The Aigles Bleues (4-9) are finished AUS play until January.
