X-Women hockey No. 4 in country for fifth straight week

CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#13)
No changes at the top

OTTAWA (CIS) – There are no changes at the top this week in Canadian Interuniversity Sport national rankings.

Saint Mary's (women's basketball), Carleton (men's basketball), McGill (women's hockey), Alberta (men's hockey), UBC (women's swimming & women's volleyball), Toronto (men's swimming) and McMaster (men's volleyball) all maintain their No. 1 status.

The top two teams in the country met in both women's and men's hockey this past weekend.

On the women's side, No. 1 McGill (9-0) dominated Montreal 5-0 on Sunday. Following their third loss in as many games against McGill this season, the reigning national champion Carabins (5-3) fall to No. 3 behind Queen's (11-1-3) in the new coaches' poll.

In men's hockey, top-ranked Alberta and No. 2 Calgary went into their two-game series with perfect 12-0 records. The Dinos (13-0-1) took the first duel 2-0 on Friday but the Golden Bears (13-1) rebounded on Saturday with a 3-2 double-overtime win.

CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#8)
Bears, Dinos still 1-2 following weekend split

OTTAWA (CIS) – Following a weekend split against their provincial rivals, the University of Alberta Golden Bears find themselves trailing the Calgary Dinos by one point in the Canada West men's hockey standings but managed to hold to the No. 1 spot in the CIS national rankings for the eighth time in as many polls this season.

In the closest poll of the campaign, both teams received eight first-place votes from the 17-member media panel. In the end, top-ranked Alberta (13-1) edged No. 2 Calgary (13-0-1) in total points, 161 to 159.

The remaining first-place nod went to Acadia but wasn't enough to push the Axemen (10-1) past the reigning University Cup champion UNB Varsity Reds (10-1-1) in third place. UNB tallied 131 points in the new Top 10 compared to 124 for its AUS rival.

Rounding out this week's poll are the No. 5 McGill Redmen (9-3-1 / no change), No. 6 UQTR Patriotes (9-4 / up four positions), No. 7 Lakehead Thunderwolves (9-3 / down one), No. 8 Queen's Gaels (8-0-5 / previously unranked), No. 9 Western Mustangs (8-4 / down one) and No. 10 UPEI Panthers (5-4-1 / down one).

Last weekend's much-anticipated duel at the top between Alberta and Calgary lived up to the hype.

In Friday's series opener in Calgary, the Dinos prevailed 2-0 thanks to two goals in a span of 48 seconds in the third period and a 32-save performance by Jacob DeSerres. They looked to be on their way to a two-game sweep the following night in Edmonton but the Golden Bears erased a 2-0 deficit in the third, tying it with 20 seconds left in regulation on a goal by Jordan Rowley, and then completed the comeback thanks to Kruise Reddick's double-overtime winner.

Both teams kick off the second half of the regular season on home ice this weekend, with Alberta hosting Manitoba (6-7-1) on Friday and Saturday, while Calgary battles Regina (8-6).

Meanwhile in the AUS conference, UNB was upset 3-2 by cross-town rival St. Thomas last Wednesday but rebounded with a pair of wins over the weekend, 9-2 against Moncton and 5-3 versus UPEI. For its part, Acadia needed extra time to beat StFX 3-2 and also doubled Dalhousie 4-2.

The V-Reds and Axemen are set to clash Saturday night in Wolfville, N.S.

Also of note in the new media poll, Queen's, which has yet to lose in regulation this season, makes its first appearance in the national rankings since the 1982-83 campaign. That year, the Gaels were ranked seventh on Nov. 29 and tenth on Jan. 25.
