X-Women claim two games from Panthers

The X-Women hockey team picked up a pair of pre-season exhibition wins this weekend, both at the expense of the UPEI Panthers. Saturday afternoon the X-Women shut out their AUS opponent 2-0, then followed up with a 3-1 victory on Sunday.

In Saturday's win, the teams played scoreless hockey through two periods of play as the X-Women outshot the Panthers 22-11 over the opening 40 minutes.

Freshman forward Daley Oddy broke the goose egg at the 13:38 mark of the third period while the X-Women were on a power play. Schyler Campbell and Alex Normore assisted on the goal.

Kara Power added the insurance marker with six and a half minutes left in the game, off a Taylor Dale pass.

Freshman goalie Sojung Shin picked up the shoutout win in the StFX net, turning aside 21 Panthers shots.

Courtney Arseneau took the loss for UPEI, recording 31 saves.

The same two netminders faced off in Sunday's matinee, with Sojung again picking up the win. The X-Women outshot the Panthers 28-18 en route to the 3-1 victory.

After a scoreless first period, Normore got the X-Women on the board at 16:58 of the second, her shot from a hard angle outside the faceoff dot beating Arseneau. Campbell and Oddy had the helpers.

Fifth year veteran forward Daniela Falconio scored for StFX with 56 seconds remaining in the second period. She tapped in a rebound off a Kira Dube shot from the slot. Cate Civaterese also picked up an assist on the play.

The X-Women went ahead 3-0 on a Paige Belair third period goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Lisa Downey and Molly MacDonald were in on the assists.

The Panthers scored their lone goal while on the power play late in the game, as Teagan Pringle tallied at 17:38. Laura Bradley and Anja Weisser assisted.

The games mark the end of StFX's pre-season schedule as they posted a 2-3 exhibition record over two weekends of play. They will play their AUS regular season opener at home on Friday, October 18th when they host the Dalhousie Tigers at 7:00 pm.
